Signs of a Hidden Water Leak and How to Find It

A higher bill, damp patches or running water with every tap closed? The signs of a hidden leak, a one-hour meter test and when to book electronic detection.

The Quick Answer: Your Meter Finds a Leak Before You Do

Most household leaks are hidden behind walls, under tiles or in the ground tank. The clearest sign is a water bill higher than usual with no change in how you use water, or a high-consumption alert. Checking is simple: the meter test below tells you within an hour whether there's a leak, and electronic detection then pinpoints it with no breaking.

Why a Small Leak Is Worth Fixing

Small leaks add up. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense programme, leaks in the average American household can waste more than 9,300 gallons a year (about 35,000 litres), and a single tap dripping once a second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year (over 11,000 litres). The bill isn't the biggest cost either: escaping water reaches walls and foundations, leaving damp and cracking that is far harder to treat later.

Signs of a Hidden Leak at Home

  • A higher bill for no reason: a sudden or repeated rise without any change in use.
  • Running water with every tap closed: a faint trickle or hiss inside a wall or under the floor.
  • Damp on walls or ceilings: dark patches, bubbling or peeling paint, or a musty smell.
  • Warm or cracked floor tiles: a warm patch can mean a leak on the hot-water line, and cracking or sinking tiles can mean water underneath.
  • A ground tank that keeps dropping: if the level falls while nobody is using water, the leak is often in the tank itself or the pipework it feeds.

The Meter Test: Check It Yourself in an Hour

  1. Wait until the ground tank is full and has stopped filling, then close every tap and don't use any water.
  2. Note or photograph the meter reading.
  3. After an hour with no water use, read the meter again.

If the meter has moved, there's a leak between the meter and the tank, or in the tank itself. If the meter stayed still but the tank level dropped, the leak is most likely in the tank or the pipework inside the house. Either way, the next step is to find the exact spot before anything is broken.

How Electronic Leak Detection Works, With No Breaking

The technician checks the water network, bathrooms, kitchen and ground tank with acoustic sensors, thermal imaging and pressure testing, pinpoints the leak and shows you the result on the spot. It usually takes 30 minutes to two hours depending on the home, and your provider issues an official inspection report with a clear recommendation for the repair.

The price is fixed and shown before you book: ⃁ 349 for an apartment and ⃁ 499 for a villa, paid fully online. If the repair proves the leak point in the report was wrong, tell Zabbitna on WhatsApp within 14 days of the inspection to arrange a free re-inspection.

What the Inspection Doesn't Include

Detection doesn't include breaking, digging or lifting tiles. If the repair needs any of that, you keep the report and choose freely who carries it out. The most common source found in Eastern Province homes is the ground tank, and its fix is available directly through ground tank waterproofing from ⃁ 1300.

Can a leaking ground tank affect water quality?

It can: a crack that lets water out can also let the surroundings in. That's why a tank with a confirmed leak deserves a proper check and waterproofing after cleaning and sanitising; the guide to ground tank waterproofing explains when it's needed.
