Septic Tank Emptying: Signs It's Full and How Often

A full septic tank warns you before it overflows: odours and damp around the lid, then slow drains. How to read the signs, and why a sealed tank fills faster than you'd expect.

The Quick Answer: A Septic Tank Warns You Before It Overflows

A full septic tank gives clear signals: a rising level, sewage odours near the lid, damp or standing water around it, and then slow drains in the house if emptying is left too long. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, common signs of a failing septic system include sewage backing up from toilets and drains into the home, sinks and showers draining very slowly, gurgling in the plumbing, standing water or damp spots near the tank, and sewage odours around it. Emptying before it overflows is far easier and cleaner than dealing with sewage indoors.

How Often Does a Septic Tank Need Emptying?

It depends on the type of tank. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. That interval is for tanks that let their liquid flow out into a drainage field in the soil, so only the sludge and floating scum stay behind. A sealed tank with no outlet holds everything the house drains into it, which is why the World Health Organization describes a fully lined tank as having no outlet and needing frequent emptying.

The US agency also lists four factors that affect how often a tank needs pumping: household size, the total wastewater generated, the volume of solids and the tank size. Some tanks let part of their water soak into the soil and fill more slowly, unless the ground around them is saturated. The best guide is your own record: note the date of every emptying, because the gap between them tends to repeat unless your water use changes.

What Should Stay Out of the Drains?

The US agency advises flushing nothing but human waste and toilet paper, and keeping grease, oils and chemicals out of the drains, because many of these materials don't break down easily.

  • Fat and cooking oil: collect it in a sealed container for the bin.
  • Wet wipes, nappies and sanitary products: they don't break down and build up in the tank.
  • Chemicals: harsh drain cleaners, paints and pesticides belong well away from the drains.
  • Coffee grounds and food scraps: put them in the bin, not the sink.

Every litre you save delays a sealed tank filling up: fix dripping taps and leaking toilet cisterns, and spread laundry across the week rather than running back-to-back loads in one day. If you suspect a leak you can't see, the guide to signs of a hidden water leak explains how to check.

Don't Open the Tank or Climb In

Septic tank gases are dangerous, even for professionals: the World Health Organization advises against workers entering pits because of the risk of injury or death from collapse or from breathing toxic gases. So keep the lid closed, don't lean over the opening, keep children away, and leave the emptying to your provider.

How Septic Tank Emptying Works

At booking you choose one or two trips, depending on the size of your tank and what you know about how full it is. The price is fixed at ⃁ 249 per trip, the final price shows before you pay, and payment is fully online. The technician calls you 30 minutes before arrival, then the tank is pumped out for the number of trips you booked.

If you have a blockage inside the house and a full tank at the same time, both can be dealt with in one visit through drain unblocking. Emptying is for homes not connected to the sewer network, and doesn't include excavation or repairing structural breaks.

How do I know if it's a blockage or a full septic tank?

If the problem is at one point inside the house, it's usually a blockage; if the septic tank level itself is high, you need emptying. Not sure? Send a quick description on WhatsApp and you'll be pointed to the right service, and the guide to blocked drains at home covers the causes and how to prevent them.
